How To Clean Your Steering Wheel: 6 Steps To Follow

Cleaning your steering wheel can seem like a daunting task at first. Many people worry about worsening the condition of their steering wheels just because they don’t know how to perform the job. Well, here at WVDOT Automotive, I aim to make your lives easier.

I will be listing the six steps that will guide you in a detailed manner on cleaning your steering wheel safely and efficiently. I can guarantee that if you follow this guide to a T, you will end up with a shiny and good-looking steering wheel, which will be better than the previous one.

Things You’ll Need

You don’t need a lot of things when it comes to cleaning your vehicle’s interior. The main things you need are a car cleaner and a microfiber cloth. Other than these two, you may also need a bucket of water for diluting the cleaner.

Although there are plenty of options available on the market, do you want to risk it with an unknown cleaner? When I was researching for a decent cleaner for a steering wheel, some made some people’s steering wheel much worse. So, I would suggest that you stick to a product from the above list.

Step 1: Microfiber Cloth With A Cleaner

The first step is simple. Take your cleaning spray and your microfiber cloth. Spray the microfiber cloth with the cleaner. If the cleaner did not come in a spray bottle, I would advise you to take one and pour the whole bottle into it. It becomes much easier and convenient to use in a spray bottle.

Squirt the cleaner onto the cloth until it is damp to the touch. Do not spray too much cleaner that it starts dripping. A small amount will be more than enough for one surface. You should also not spray directly onto the steering wheel.

The tiny droplets may get trapped in small openings. You don’t want that. If the bottle is on stream mode, change it to spray. You need the whole cloth-covered, not a specific part. The importance of this will be explained in the next step.

Step 2: Towel And Steering Wheel

This is where the fun begins. Spread the towel on your hands, and wrap your hands around the steering wheel, just the way you hold it when your drive your car. This ensures that you will get maximum coverage of the diameter of the steering wheel.

Now, you start from the top. Place your hand on the top and do a full circle. You can go clockwise or anticlockwise; it does not matter. You should focus more on areas where there is more dirt build-up. You should do the whole process a couple of times to make sure you get all the dirt out.

The main trick is not to apply too much pressure on the steering wheel. There is a chance that the color may get lifted. And there is no coming back from that. And don’t forget the center of the steering wheel as well. Just don’t apply pressure, and you will be good to go.

Step 3: Evaporation Solution

The cleaning solution does not evaporate quickly. It takes its due time. In order to speed up the process, get another cloth, and dampen it with water. The dampness should be similar to the microfiber cloth you used before. If the cloth is too wet, then it will start dripping.

Use the same hand motion as before. Without applying too much pressure, clean the steering wheel thoroughly. Spread the cloth on your hand, and then grab the steering wheel the same way you drive your car. Repeat the process just like when you were using the cleaner. Paper towels can be used too if you don’t have more cleaning clothes.

It is not recommended to get in direct contact with the cleaner. The reason for that is you don’t know if the skin may be allergic to some of the chemicals. If on the off chance, you make contact, then it is recommended to rinse thoroughly.

Step 4: Cleaning Off The Water Right Away

Now, this is the easiest part of all. Take a dry cloth. You should not use any random cloth. The best thing to use is a microfiber cloth. The reason for that is that it absorbs liquids in a much quicker fashion, and even if used to put pressure, it will not erase the surface color.

Other clothes are rough to the touch. They are not recommended for any cleaning purposes unless you want to damage the surface of your steering wheel. After cleaning off the water, the steering wheel will look brand new and shiny.

The process should be done immediately because the water will leave spots on the steering wheel if it dries up. That will really not look good. And then, you will have to perform the whole process again.

The whole process will take you a mere 20 minutes. So, 20 minutes of your time will give you an almost new-looking steering wheel. I say that is a bargain.

Step 5: Use A Soft Interior Brush

Although the main process has been detailed, there are more ways to clean your steering wheel even further if the previous process did not yield the results you expected. So, let’s see what else you can do.

Another thing that you can use is a soft interior brush. These brushes have soft bristles, so they will not leave marks or lines. There are guides that suggest using a toothbrush.

That should be done as a last option. A toothbrush should be used without applying any pressure. The bristles are quite hard, and they will surely damage the surface.

If you don’t have a brush, then you can use an interior scrub pad. You may be able to find one at your nearby hardware store. Although these pads are not as effective as a brush, they are still more than good enough for the job. So, you have many options to further clean your steering wheel.

Step 6: Look For Disinfectants

Another thing that many people look for is disinfectants. There are machines designed for such tasks. The machine sprays the solution wherever you point. They have basically motorized spray bottles. You can spray the whole steering wheel with the liquid. This will ensure that all bacteria and viruses will be wiped off.

Steam machines are common. You can buy one at a local hardware store. If you don’t want to spend so much, then using a good old-fashioned spray bottle will work as well. The main advantage these machines have over a regular spray is the pressure.

The pressure at which the liquid is squirted is great for eliminating all kinds of germs. Afterward, you can just take a microfiber cloth and wipe it off like normal. You will be left with a clean and shiny steering wheel, which will look brand new.

How To Get Rid Of Spots From A Leather Steering Wheel

It is very common for spots to form on a leather steering wheel. These spots may be due to wear and tear or due to water. So, what can you do to fix this? Well, I have just got the solution for you. This solution will work only for the latter. Wear and tear cannot be reversed.

You need three things:

  • Lemon juice
  • Cream of tartar
  • Soft cloth

Let me explain the process. You have to mix together 1 part of lemon juice and 1 part cream of tartar. Mix thoroughly until the paste has a consistent look. The paste must be poured on the soft cloth; a microfiber one is preferred.

Rub the paste onto the spot and let it sit for a few hours. There should not be sunlight or any direct source of light at this stage. After about two hours, you can buff the stain with a bit more mixture. Although this is not required, it is best not to leave any room for mistakes. Then you can clean it off.

The process is simple, efficient and will make sure that your steering wheel will be spotless, literally.

How To Get Rid Of Scratches On A Leather Steering Wheel

A car is meant for heavy usage. Unfortunately, most manufacturers don’t think of this thoroughly before they use different materials in a car’s interior. Although leather looks good and is durable, it can be scratched pretty easily.

Yes, the scratches can be removed. So, what can you do to eliminate those scratches? The process is a bit tricky, but I will help you through the process.

For doing this you only need two things:

  • Olive oil or baby oil
  • Soft cotton cloth

Yes, for this task, you specifically need a soft cotton cloth. Dab the cloth with olive oil. Don’t soak it. Then rub the cloth at the affected part. You have to use a circular motion. No other motion must be used. Or else you may worsen the scratch situation. Slowly move outwards, with the same motion.

The science behind it is that the scratches will soak up the oil. They may appear darker, but the color will become lighter after a while. All in all, the scratches will be barely noticeable.

This is the best option available right now. No need to buy products that claim such effectiveness. They may damage the steering wheel even further.

Best Way To Clean Sticky Leather Steering Wheel

You may not believe it, but a sticky steering wheel is a very common thing. People use their cars for extended periods of time. Whether it is hand sweat or greasy fingers, they will contribute to the steering wheel becoming sticky.

The steering wheel becomes very gross to look at, and using it also becomes difficult. So, what is the best way to clean a sticky steering wheel?

The quickest and most efficient way is by using a sponge. Soak a sponge with water and press it to squeeze out all excess liquid. It should basically be damp to the touch. Then dab the sponge all over the steering wheel. This will catch all the dust and debris caught on it.

The next step is to mix equal parts of baking soda and water. Pour the solution into a spray bottle. The bottle should be mixed well to ensure all of the baking soda is dissolved. Then the liquid must be sprayed all over the steering wheel. Let it sit for around 15 minutes.

Basically, the mixture breaks up the grease and the sticky layer—use a microfiber or a soft cotton cloth to clean everything up. Repeat the process until the wheel is completely dry.

FAQ

Although cleaning a steering wheel is a pretty straightforward process, there are questions asked by different people. I have taken these questions from different online forums. I will be answering them, and I hope that they will alleviate some of your confusion.

What Can I Use To Clean My Steering Wheel?

The internet is filled with different remedies that are designed to clean a vehicle’s steering wheel. There are thousands of YouTube videos dedicated to this matter.

The reality is that these methods are mostly designed for one type of surface only. They may not work with the others, and yet the title states otherwise. This is to, most probably, rack up reviews. You really don’t want to risk it with these methods.

The other method, which is tried and tested, is to use a specially formulated steering wheel cleaner. These products are designed with a broader perspective in mind. They are designed to clean a car’s whole interior. So, that includes a steering wheel.

Now, not all of them will work flawlessly. Some may damage the wheel even further. This is why I have listed some of the top steering wheel cleaners on the market.

They will, with a full guarantee, make it look brand new. There is nothing to risk because they have been tested by not only the brand but thousands of buyers too. The process has also been listed by me, so you can do everything in a safer manner.

How Do I Deep Clean A Steering Wheel?

Not satisfied with the results of your cleaning process? Or are you just one of those who want a more thorough cleaning process? Well, there is a deep cleaning process.

I must tell you that this process is tricky. If you don’t follow it properly or skip a step, you will probably cause more damage to it. You really don’t want that.

The best way to deep clean a steering wheel is by using a soft interior cleaning brush. The brush can get closer to the dirt more than anything ever can. Again, I did say this before; a toothbrush must be used if there is nothing to use.

A toothbrush has a high probability of causing scratches, which may or may not be fixed using the olive oil method I listed above. Even if it is fixable, do you really want to be caught in this cycle?

An interior toothbrush is designed for this task. It has soft bristles which will not damage any surface, no matter the applied pressure. So, you can clean the steering wheel from the inside out, getting all dust and debris, which are not reachable by a piece of cloth.

Can I Use A Magic Eraser On My Steering Wheel?

Now, this is a fun question to answer. To clarify, yes magic eraser can clean a steering wheel. And, surprisingly, it is quite effective at that too.

When I started researching for this question, I thought that there is no way that this would work. Well, guess what, I was wrong. A magic eraser will clean the steering wheel, but there are a few caveats.

As you may know and have observed, the original color of a steering wheel is matte. Slowly in time, it starts collecting dust and grease, which gives it a shiny look. There are actually people who prefer the dirty look to the original one.

A magic eraser is abrasive. It basically takes a thin layer off of the plastic, exposing the original look underneath. If you only use the magic eraser, then there will be problems in the future. You need to use a leather protection cream afterward to make sure the leather will not have any long-lasting effects.

The main caveat is that if you scrub too much, then there is a guarantee that your steering wheel will be ruined. You need to use little amounts of the eraser to make sure it will not cause any issues.

Can I Use Clorox Wipes On My Steering Wheel?

Some of you may be unaware of what Clorox wipes are. These wipes are soaked in chemicals that give them disinfecting properties.

Clorox wipes are highly effective, and according to the product’s own advertisement, it kills 99.9% of all viruses and germs. So, using that on a steering wheel will greatly reduce the number of germs on it.

The question arises if Clorox wipes will damage the steering wheel or not. Unfortunately, the answer is the one you won’t like. There is already a very small number of people who tried to use Clorox wipes in their car’s interiors. Their results were quite disappointing. Clorox wipes use a very powerful chemical.

They will damage your whole interior, steering wheel or not. You really don’t want this to happen with your vehicle.

Well, fortunately for you, there are products on Amazon with thousands of ratings from happy buyers. These products are designed to eliminate bacteria, viruses, and germs. Although they may not be as effective as Clorox wipes, the end result is still more than enough for most people.

How Dirty Is My Steering Wheel?

You have no idea how dirty a steering wheel can get. Research conducted in 2011 has stated that a car steering wheel can get up to 9 times dirty as when compared to a public toilet seat.

And you would think that nothing could beat that. Well, think again. That is simply gross. Well, thanks to this article, you will not have to worry about that anymore.

Out of all the parts in a vehicle, the steering wheel is the dirtiest of them all. That is just crazy. This is after considering the cup holder, seatbelt, and even the volume knob on your car’s deck.

If you want more specifications, the bacteria and germ level can reach up to 700 per square inch. This is a number many of you may believe is just a typo. But that is true.

You may be wondering how did it get so dirty? Well, there are plenty of factors at play here. Your hands touch many surfaces. Most of them contain germs. Then comes the problem of oil and grease, which may be left on the steering wheel after eating food.

Germs and bacteria love to grow in places like that. Over time, without any cleaning, the same process is repeated over and over. The germ collection increases to the point that it can defeat a dirty public toilet.

Why Is My Steering Wheel So Sticky?

I did explain, in a short manner, why a steering wheel can get dirty. But it getting sticky is a whole other issue. There are many things that can cause a sticky steering wheel. Let’s see the main ones, and I will also list a solution to avoid the problem in the future.

The most common reason for steering wheels to get sticky is due to oil from food. Fried food objects have a lot of oil. This oil clings to the hands and can only be removed using water and a thorough rinse.

But, for example, you ate in the car and had to go, the oil will be transferred to the steering wheel. It will stay there and dry up. The dried oil is extremely sticky.

Another reason can be sweaty hands. This is a common issue with many people, including me. Hands release too much sweat when you are driving for a long duration or if you just carried something. The sweat dries up, causing the stickiness which we have all come to know.

The process does differ for each surface. For example, vinyl is the easiest to clean. But the universal way is to use a steering wheel cleaner like the ones I listed above. They are designed to combat these issues and make sure you get a steering wheel that is just as new.

How Do I Remove Mold From My Steering Wheel?

So, you are one of those people who have kept the car in the garage for years. Or did you buy an unused car and are looking to restore it? Well, you may have noticed the problem of molding on the steering wheel. There is a solution, but you may not like it.

The solution involves using bleach. Now, bleach is designed to make the color of the surface light. So, it will definitely have that effect on the steering wheel. It is highly effective against molds, so you need a small amount.

If you are careful and apply the same amount throughout the diameter of the steering wheel, the color drop will be barely noticeable.

Conclusion

So, there you have it, my take on the best steering wheel cleaner. I carefully researched every single part of this article to ensure you are getting accurate information. From product listings to the FAQs, I researched completely because damaged steering wheel leather does not look pretty.

Well, you won’t have to worry about that. Out of all the products, I would definitely pick the most rated one, the CarGuys Super Cleaner.

I hope that this lengthy article may have helped you in deciding if cleaning your steering wheel is worth it or not. If it has, then you should follow the guide to make sure you get your steering wheel to top-notch condition.
