Let us start the article with the most powerful winching battery out there.

Not only can it power your electronics with ease, but it can power a heavy-duty winch. The battery, when installed, gives you a reliable start up every single time.

The XS Power D6500 Battery has an AGM design, which means that it is not like conventional flooded batteries.

The difference between the two is that the acid that flows freely in normal batteries is enclosed in glass mats which improves and drastically improves its charging time.

The use of an AGM design means that it does not need any extra maintenance. There is no need for topping it with water every few weeks.

You also don’t need to clean the terminals, making it a very convenient buy.

Due to the battery being maintenance-free, it is fully sealed which means it also becomes spill-proof. So, you don’t have to worry about the acid leaking or spilling.

It can also be installed in any position except inverted, so you can install it with the peace of mind that there is no risk of it leaking.

The spill-proof design also improves its vibration and shock resistance. So, you can take your vehicle off-road without any worry and tension because it can handle it easily.

Getting into the technical side, the battery can provide a whopping 3900 amps, which is a lot for a battery.

It provides 1070 cranking amps for starting the vehicle, making sure your car starts up reliably every single time.

The reserve capacity is also 75 Ah meaning if needed for an emergency, it can provide a current of 75 A for one hour continuously.

The casing is also made of strong ABS plastic to handle vibrations and shocks easily. XS Power also provides the user with a 3-year warranty in which it can be replaced free of cost.

So, you don’t have to worry about it failing on you or about anything, as a replacement warranty covers you.

The drawback of owning this one is that it is quite heavy, so you may need a helping hand when installing it.
PROS
  • Maintenance-free
  • Spill-proof
  • Reliable start-up
  • Decent reserve capacity
CONS
  • Very heavy

All in all, the XS Power battery has excellent performance, and nothing can beat it in its price range.

The only drawback is that all those features and performance increase the weight of the battery.

Optima Batteries has been one of the most respectable manufacturers in the world. They have been dominating most of my lists in the hunt for the best batteries for every use.

The YellowTop is no exception. It deserves spot number two due to many reasons.

The 8042-218 D75/25 Battery uses an AGM design just like the XS-Power battery. This alone boosts the battery’s performance in almost every way.

The unique thing is that it uses a spiral tube design. In this design, the lead plates are places in a spiral layout which also helps in improving its durability.

The plates used are made up of 99.99% pure lead. And Optima Batteries is one of the very few manufacturers that use such high-quality lead.

Other manufacturers use lead alloys to reduce their costs and still charge the same.

The advantages of pure lead are fast charge, high cold cranking amps (CCA), long-lasting battery life, and a very slow self-discharge rate.

The battery holds up very well in environments that cause intense vibrations and shocks. So, your vehicle can handle off-road driving or rough terrains easily without it falling on you.

The YellowTop is fully sealed and maintenance-free.

There is no risk of spilling the electrolyte. There is also no need to change the water or clean the terminals as it doesn’t need it.

On the technical side, the battery can produce 620 CCA, which is lower than the XS Power one but is still more than enough for a quick and reliable start-up every single time.

The YellowTop can also produce enough charge for a winch to handle 12000 pounds.

It can also handle the load of power-hungry electronics such as speaker systems or high beam lights.

The battery’s reserve capacity is almost 100 minutes, which is more than enough when it may be needed for an emergency.

The YellowTop can handle extreme temperatures with ease. It can be used in temperature conditions starting from -40°C and up to 50°C.

So, you don’t have to worry about it if you take your vehicle to places with their weather in the extremes. Optima Batteries provides the user with a 36-month free replacement warranty.

Although cases of manufacturer faults are extremely rare, the warranty is still provided for your peace of mind.

The battery is quite expensive. It also is much heavier than some batteries.

Optima is also known for not honoring their warranty replacement, making it difficult for some people to get a replacement.

PROS
  • Maintenance-free
  • Extreme temperature resistance
  • Spill-proof
  • 36-month warranty
  • Fast charge
CONS
  • Quite heavy
  • Very expensive
  • Difficult warranty replacement

All in all, YellowTop is a great battery with excellent features.

It mainly lacks the manufacturer’s poor after-sales service, which should not be the case given the price of the product.

Are you looking to spend a little less than what was listed above?

The third position is the 48AGM Battery by ACDelco, which is the best bang for the buck battery.

AGM design has been quite popular in car batteries. The ACDelco brings the same technology at a much lower price.

The use of AGM means that there is no risk of spilling the electrolyte because it is trapped inside the special fiberglass.

Due to the battery not having free-flowing acid, it also becomes maintenance-free which means that it does not require being topped off with water every few weeks or cleaning the terminals every few months.

This makes it easy to handle and very convenient.

Instead of pure lead, it uses a calcium lead alloy, which may seem like a weak point of the battery at first, but it has excellent conductivity and a greater surface area and this lead to faster charging.

The ACDelco battery has an excellent CCA rating of 760 which means it can reliably start your car every single time, regardless of the temperature.

It can handle temperatures from -30°C and up to 45°C. So, it can be used in most environments with ease.

The ACDelco battery also has a high-density negative paste to improve the conductivity, which improves its efficiency.

It also uses strong ABS plastic for its enclosure to ensure protection from strong shocks and vibrations, so you can drive your vehicle anywhere you like without the risk of it being susceptible to rough terrains.

I found that this brand also provides with its battery a 36-month replacement warranty.

You can buy your new battery tension free because you can replace it anytime during the period as mentioned above, given that there is a manufacturing defect or it is not performing as advertised.

There have been reports of batteries failing on users frequently.

There have also been reports of some batteries leaking acid, which should not be possible as, according to the manufacturer, it has been sealed.

So, there may be quality control issues in a few batteries.

PROS
  • Maintenance-free
  • It can be used in extensive temperature ranges
  • 3-year warranty
  • Fast charging
CONS
  • Quality control issues

The ACDelco battery has outstanding performance, and for the price, you cannot ask for more.

But, the lack of quality control, which has led to acid leaks and failing batteries, might be something you may need to consider when buying this one.

Its warranty will still cover you, so you can get a free replacement if any such issue arises.

Like the Optima battery, Odyssey has been a decent performer in my various battery review lists. The Odyssey battery, although being last, has very respectable performance and health.

The Odyssey 48-720 Battery has an AGM design, which means better battery life, faster charging, and high shock and vibration resistance.

It uses 99.99% lead plates, which helps in faster charging, better life, and improved efficiency.

The use of pure lead means that thin plates with better performance can be used compared to alloy based batteries.

Due to the plates being thin, more of them can be fit inside the battery, increasing the conductivity surface area, hence improving charging.

No alloys also mean there very little internal resistance, which improves the reliability and its performance. I found that this battery is completely maintenance-free and spill-proof.

So, you don’t have to check and refill the water levels or clean the terminals, unlike conventional flooded batteries, which have to be checked after every few weeks.

This is very convenient to use. The spill-proof design also adds to the convenience because you can install the battery in almost any orientation, making it possible to fit it in tight places.

The Odyssey battery has a reserve capacity of a very decent 130 minutes, which can be used when the battery is needed for emergency purposes.

It can also be deep cycledup to 800 times with an 80% depth of discharge. You don’t have to worry about it falling on you because it is built to handle such use.

Even if it does, it has the fastest charge capabilities of any other battery. It can fully charge from 0 to 100 in just 4-6 hours.

The Odyssey battery can deliver 723 cold-cranking amps, which is good enough to start your vehicle in one go.

It can also deliver 63 amps consecutively for an hour, which is great if you need the battery quick to power up heavy electronic equipment.

It can handle extreme temperatures very well and can be used in temperatures as low as -40°C.

The manufacturer provides the user with a 2-4 year warranty for the battery, which depends on the battery’s usage.

For simple engine starting purposes, the warranty is 4-years. For commercial usage, the warranty can be claimed in the 3 years that follow.

For any other application instead of these two, the warranty drops down to 2 years, not a lot but is still good to have.

The only drawback is that it has a high price. The price is almost similar to the first two batteries.
PROS
  • Maintenance-free
  • Spill-proof
  • Fast charge
  • 2-4 year warranty
  • It can be deep cycled
CONS
  • Very high price

It has an excellent performance in terms of everything. It is efficient, has fast charged and covered in the warranty.

But all of that comes with a high price tag, which might not be suitable for some.

The NorthStar Pure Lead Group 34/78 Battery was a tough battery to place when compiling this list.

The battery is no short of impressive when it comes to giving constant juice to your vehicle and all the housed electronics.

It features an AGM design which provides superior battery performance than most conventional flooded batteries out there.

All of the acids is stored inside thin fiberglass, which improves conductivity and makes it impossible for the acid to leak or spill, making the battery 100% leak-proof and seal proof.

NorthStar uses pure lead when manufacturing the plates, unlike manufacturers that use alloys and some additives to improve performance.

That results in much poor battery life and more common problems with the battery failing.

Now you don’t have to worry about that anymore because pure lead eliminates most of these problems and still provides superior battery life and performance.

It enables fast charging, which is a major factor for people who frequently charge their battery.

The NorthStar battery is the perfect match for most electrical winches. It has excellent deep cycle capabilities and is rated functional at more than 900 cycles at a 50% discharge.

So, you don’t have to worry about it running out on you, which may already be a rare occurrence because of its huge reserve capacity of 133 minutes.

So, it can provide a consistent 25 amp current for more than two hours.

It has an excellent CCA rating of 880, which means it can reliably start up your car at any given temperature ranging from -40°C to 60°C.

The battery is expensive and has a slow recharge time than the other batteries.
PROS
  • Good CCA
  • Spill-proof
  • Maintenance-free
CONS
  • Very expensive
  • Slow charging time

All in all, the battery performs very decently with great performance and features. It even comes with a 3-year warranty. But all of this comes with a hefty price tag.

Coming into the last place is a battery by Exide, a popular manufacturer worldwide but has never taken up a spot in my reviews.

Although taking the last place, it was very impressive to find a battery with a great feature set for a very reasonable price.

Like all the other batteries, the Exide Edge FP-AGML4/94R Battery has an AGM design in which the acid is stored between fiberglass plates.

This reduces the chance of spills and leaks from very common to completely zero.

It is also maintenance-free, thanks to the AGM design chosen by the manufacturer. There is no need to top it off with water or clean the terminals every few weeks as it is not required.

Exide states that its battery provides up to 15% better and reliable starting power than flooded batteries.

This is possible due to Exide’s SureLife Graphite Technology, which can only be found in its batteries.

This technology greatly increases the reserve capacity, which is key factor people consider when buying a battery to power a winch.

The Exide battery has a high reserve capacity of 140 minutes, one of the highest ones here. It has a very respectable 800 CCA.

This rating is taken at a temperature of -18°C, so that means even if the temperature gets colder, it can reliably power up your car and electronics.

For countries and cities with high temperature, this battery can be used without any problem. It can be used for temperatures exceeding 50°C.

There have been problems of batteries dying on people quicker than expected and failing without any proper indication.
PROS
  • Great battery life
  • Long life cycle
  • High reserve capacity
CONS
  • Unexpected failures in some units

The battery has great performance and has a very competitive price.

But the buyer is at risk when buying this battery because there had occasions when a battery failed on the users completely without any indication.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q1. How Do I Know Which Battery Will Work With My Winch?

Normally, all winches come with manuals and have a battery rating. So, that must be checked by the user before purchasing a new battery.

Q2. Are These Batteries Deep Cycle?

All of the batteries listed above can be deep cycled.

This is so important because it is common for winches to drain a battery fully, which would kill a normal battery. These batteries are built for regular discharge and recharge cycles.

Q3. Some People Use Dual Batteries In Their Vehicles. Why?

It is recommended for a battery to not be pushed to its absolute limit. So, two of them divide the load equally hence providing stable power output.
