Optima have dominated many of my articles and recommendations in the hunt for the best batteries available for vehicles or commercial uses.

Optima Batteries has been present in almost all of them. So, starting strong and coming into the number one place is the DH6 YellowTop Battery.

You cannot go wrong when you buy a YellowTop battery. Such is the case here. It has been chosen for the first place due to many reasons.

The Optima battery comes with an Absorbed Glass Mat (AGM) design. The use of this design is one of the major reasons for the outstanding performance this battery provides.

In an AGM battery, the acid, instead of being flooded, is stored in fiberglass sheets which improves the conductivity, charging rate and gives it the capability to provide much higher cold cranking amps than conventional flooded batteries.

It also uses pure lead instead of lead alloy, which many manufacturers use in the battery business. The main reason is to cut costs while delivering a subpar performing battery.

But, with Optima Batteries, you don’t have to worry about that. Lead means that the plates can be made pretty thin, without any sacrifice in performance.

Due to the plates being thin, more of them can be fit inside the same enclosure, hence greatly increasing the conductivity surface area.

This subsequently improves its charging and slows down its discharge rate drastically.

So, even if it is stored for months with the terminals disconnected, it will keep its charge and be ready when needed.

The battery is fully sealed which makes it spill-proof. So, it can be mounted in any position without risking its acid leaking.

It is also maintenance-free. You do not have to top it off with water or clean the terminals as it does not require it and this makes it very convenient to have.

The YellowTop is a dual purpose battery.

It can handle more than 300 full depletions and recharges easily, so you don’t have to worry about it falling on you if you manage to discharge it fully.

So, it can not only be used for starting up your car; it can even power heavy electronics and systems like stereo systems or high beam lights with ease.

It also has a decent reserve capacity. It can provide 25 amperes continuously for 140 minutes straight.

So, if you forgot to turn off the lights or the radio of your car, you don’t have to worry about your battery dying on you.

The YellowTop also comes with a 36-month (3 years) free replacement warranty if there is a manufacturing defect, or it does not perform up to par.

The drawback is, it has a quite high price tag, and Optima Batteries is known for having a poor customer service system.

So, getting your battery replaced under warranty might not be an easy task.

PROS
  • Maintenance-free
  • Spill-proof
  • Easy to install
  • It can be mounted in any position
  • 3-year warranty
CONS
  • Very expensive
  • Difficult warranty claim procedure

All in all, the YellowTop is an excellent performing battery, and for the price, you should expect such performance.

It fully delivers on what is advertised. But, in case you get a faulty unit, getting it replaced may not be easy.

It was quite difficult to choose the first and second between the Odyssey battery and the Optima battery.

For almost the same price tag, the 34R-PC1500 Battery provides excellent performance and features.

Odyssey is one of the very few manufacturers globally that use 99.99% pure lead plates for their batteries.

And the use of such plates should be a deciding factor for you when choosing the appropriate battery for use.

The use of pure lead greatly increases the battery’s charging and performance while keeping the discharge rate extremely low because of very low internal resistance.

This means that while charging or discharging, there is little to no loss in energy in the form of heat, whereas in batteries with high internal resistance, the loss can go up to 30%.

Like the Optima battery, this one features an AGM design, which makes it 100% spill-proof because all of the acids are trapped in fiberglass.

It is fully sealed, so it does not require distilled water after every few weeks or even cleaning the terminals, which should be regularly checked in conventional flooded batteries.

Coming into the technical part, it can provide up to 850 CCA, according to the manufacturer.

But, according to some buyers, it provides CCA values, which are just shy of 1000. It is rated for a whopping 68Ah rating, which means that it can provide 68 Amps consecutively for an hour.

So, if it is needed to beefy power systems, it can handle it easily. It can be fully charged from 0 to 100% in only 4-6 hours because of the use of pure lead in the plates.

It also has a reserve capacity of 185 minutes which is the highest of any battery available here.

The Odyssey battery is also a dual-purpose battery, just like the Optima battery. So, it can provide a reliable start-up every single time, but it can be deep cycled many times.

For the price, you get much more. It also has a smart charge feature in which, after getting fully charged, it stops taking in further current to protect from overcharging.

It also reduces its current input if it gets very hot which is very impressive and helps preserve its life.

The battery can withstand extreme shocks and vibrations, so you can take your wrangler off-road tension free because it uses a solid ABS plastic enclosure, which is very strong and resistant to shocks.

The only main drawback is that it has a very high price tag. The warranty period is also only two years.
PROS
  • Maintenance-free
  • Spill-proof
  • Fast charging
  • Dual purpose
CONS
  • Very high price
  • Short warranty period

Summing everything up, the Odyssey battery has great performance and features.

But all of them come with an exorbitant price tag, which may not seem appealing to some. The warranty period for it is less but is better than nothing.

Earning a third-place is the NSB-AGM94R Battery by NorthStar. This battery manufacturer has also been a reliable brand, according to my research.

When searching for the best batteries in my other reviews, just after Optima, this brand was a very common name.

Their batteries also made it to some of my lists because of their excellent price to performance ratio.

The battery has also opted for an AGM design because of its vast improvement in almost every category, whether it be charging, reserve capacity, or general shock and vibration resistance, compared to traditional flooded batteries with a very nominal price increase.

NorthStar also chose to use pure lead for their battery, which improves its charging time, helping it charge in just under 6 hours.

The pure lead also has very little resistance, which can be seen in the battery’s temperatures.

It stays a lot cooler than conventional batteries because there is an up to 30% decrease in heat loss while charging and discharging.

Although it is not built for deep cycling, the battery can handle up to 900 charge cycles at a 50% discharge rate. So, you don’t have to worry if you forgot to turn the lights off in your car.

The battery can survive cold and hot temperatures easily. It can provide 860 CCA at -20°C.

So, you can use it in almost all weather conditions. It also has a reserve capacity of up to 159 minutes so that you can use it with ease.

Like many NorthStar batteries, this one has been approved as a non-hazardous battery due to the use of the best materials, which ensure a perfect seal.

It can also be installed in virtually any position, except inverted due to it being spill-proof. This also adds to the already convenient to use a battery.

The battery is built with the best materials, and the enclosure is made of solid ABS plastic for the best shock and vibration resistance.

It is also manufactured using exact BCI standards, so you can buy it with the certainty that it will perfectly fit your Jeep Wrangler.

The plastic is also highly heat resistant so that it can withstand your vehicle’s high temperature easily.

NorthStar, of all the manufacturers here, provides the longest warranty. The free replacement warranty can be claimed even after 4 years of the purchase date.

So, if any manufacturing defects arise during your usage,it will be replaced free of cost. So, you can buy it with peace of mind.

The two drawbacks are; it is expensive and is very heavy. So, a second hand may be needed when installing it.
PROS
  • Maintenance-free
  • Spill-proof
  • 4-year warranty
  • Classified as non-hazardous
  • It can be used in extreme temperatures
CONS
  • High price tag
  • Very heavy

So, I found that this battery delivers in every aspect and even has the longest warranty period than any other manufacturer.

Still, all of this comes with a high price tag. It also is considerably heavy than other batteries.

=> I also highly recommend you read my in-depth guide for NorthStar batteries.

There have been many manufacturers on my lists that have repeatedly had their batteries earn a spot on my list.

But, never has it been that I have chosen the same battery for two completely different lists. So, here comes the battery by ACDelco in fourth place.

The 48AGM Professional Battery, as the name suggests, again uses an AGM design for the best in class performance and features.

But, this time, the technology comes with a much cheaper price tag. So, there is no risk of the acid leaking out because it is trapped inside the special fiberglass.

The use of AGM design also makes it very convenient because there is no need to topping it with water or cleaning the terminals every few weeks.

It achieves the low price tag by using a calcium-lead alloy instead of pure lead like the list’s pricier options.

Don’t hesitate while reading this.

Although this specific alloy cannot reach the performance levels of pure lead, it still has great performance and even charges faster than other alloy based batteries.

The ACDelco battery has a CCA of 760, which is a lot for this price. The high CCA ensures a quick and reliable start-up every single time.

It also ensures that it is usable in a wide range of temperatures. It can withstand temperatures going from -30°C and can be used in temperatures as high as 45°C.

The manufacturer also provides the battery a 3-year warranty in which any manufacturing defects make you illegible for a free cost replacement.

So, the warranty can ensure that your battery is covered from any failures or problems present beforehand.

There have been reviews of failing on some people and also of it leaking acid, which should not be the case as it is advertised as being fully sealed.
PROS
  • Maintenance-free
  • Quick charging
  • Weather and temperature resistant
  • 3-year warranty
  • High CCA value
CONS
  • Poor quality control

For the price, you cannot get a better battery than this one. So, for anyone looking for a cheap and decently performing battery for their jeep wrangler, this one is a bang for the buck.

Coming in the last place is the 8025-160 25 RedTop Starting Battery by Optima Batteries. Yes, they earned two spots and that is very impressive.

They use an AGM design using pure lead, unlike the ACDelco battery that uses a lead alloy. Not only that, but it also has a very unique and different spiral tube design.

Optima Batteries uses this layout in many of its batteries because it improves durability and performance. It is 100% spill-proof and maintenance-free.

You don’t have to check for water levels or even clean the terminals needed in flooded batteries.

So, it can be installed in any position or angle, except inverted, for extra convenience.

The use of pure lead means that the battery can charge faster than most and increases its life cycle.

It also helps achieve a high CCA value, which makes sure of a reliable start-up every single time.

It can also withstand a few full discharges, although it is not made for that, and it is recommended not to do so.

The Optima battery can withstand temperatures of -45°C and be used in warm temperature environments for as high as 40°C.

So, it can be used in almost all weather conditions and still give reliable and excellent performance wherever you are.

With the RedTop, the manufacturer provides the user with a 36-month free replacement warranty, which can be claimed if it suffers from any factory defects or if it does not perform up to par with what is advertised to buy it tension free.

The Optima battery is priced quite high, and as stated with the YellowTop, the manufacturer does not provide warranty replacements easily.
PROS
  • Maintenance-free
  • Spill-proof
  • 3-year warranty
  • Shock and vibration resistant
CONS
  • Very expensive
  • Poor after-sales services

Although this one is being placed at the last spot, it performs an almost equivalent performance and is even covered in a 3-year warranty. But that comes with a hefty price tag.
