 Background

US 35 is a proposed 4-lane facility from Henderson in Mason County to I-64 in Putnam County.  The total length (Ohio to I-64) is approximately 34 miles (18 in Mason County; 16 in Putnam County)

This road is designated as part of National Network for motor carriers by Surface Transportation Assistance Act(1982).

In 1989, USDOT Appropriations Act funded a feasibility study for area transportation improvements.  The US 35 corridor was recommended by WVDOH for improvement.

US 35 is designated as part of National Highway System by NHS Act (1995).

Improvement of US 35 corridor was identified as priority by Charleston Metropolitan Planning Organization, Region II Planning and Development Council, Federal, State and local officials.

The Federal Record of Decision was received June 27, 2000.

Funding

Estimated total cost of corridor: $556.54 million (2007 dollars)

Expended to date:  $241.74 million

Estimated remaining cost of corridor: $314.8 million

Project Status

US 35/I-64 interchange [1.03 miles]

Grade/Drain for interchange and widening of CR 33 by Kanawha Stone began in July 2002 and was completed December 2004 at cost of $23.625 million.

Bridges and paving by Trumbull were awarded February 2006 with an anticipated completion date in the spring of 2008 at cost of $32.752 million.

Crooked Creek to WV 34 [1.67 miles], construction of 4-lane by Kanawha Stone was awarded in October 2006 with an anticipated completion date for the fall of 2008 at cost of $34.848 million.

WV 34 to CR 19 (Hurricane Creek Road) [6.28 miles], construction of 4-lane by Kokosing (Design/Build) was awarded in March 2007 and is anticipated to be completed in the spring of 2009 at cost of $78.986 million.

CR 19 (Hurricane Creek Road) to CR 15 [1.54 miles], construction of 4-lane by Elmo Greer was awarded in October 2006 with an anticipated completion date of fall 2008 at cost of $22.547 million.

CR 15 to WV 869 (Buffalo Bridge) [1.65 miles], construction of 4-lane by Mountaineer Grading was awarded October 2006 and has an anticipated completion date of fall 2008 at cost of $23.978 million.

±WV 869 (Buffalo Bridge) to CR 40 (Upper Ninemile Creek)/High Speed Connector [13 miles], Design Studies are underway with an estimated construction cost of $208 million ($16 million/mile in 2007 dollars).

±CR 40 (Upper Ninemile Creek)/High Speed Connector to CR 27 (Couch) [3.27 miles], design by MS; construction of 4-lane and bridges anticipated to begin mid-2008 at cost of $37.5 million.

±CR 27 (Couch) to Little Fivemile Creek [2.64 miles], design by EL Robinson; construction of 4-lane and bridges anticipated to begin early 2008 at cost of $41.0 million.

±Little Fivemile Creek to CR 17/1 (Coast Guard Station) [1.84 miles], design by RD Zande; construction of 4-lane and bridges anticipated to begin early 2008 at cost of $28.3 million.

±Coast Guard Station to Henderson [2 miles], construction of 4-lane by Mashuda began October 1995 and completed and opened to traffic November 1997 at cost of $25.0 million.
