2005 Summer Employment Program

SUMMER EMPLOYMENT GUIDELINES
March 18, 2005

INTRODUCTION

The purpose of these guidelines is to set forth the rules, which apply, to the employment of summer employees within the Department of Transportation.  The dual goals of this program are for the Department to obtain additional employees for the purpose of completing seasonal work tasks, while providing opportunities for students pursuing higher education to earn money for college expenses and/or to obtain practical work experiences.

 

GUIDELINES

  1. Organizational units within the Department will be limited to a reasonable number of summer employees required to accomplish the seasonal work as established by the organizational supervisor and management.  Total overall number of participants must be reduced from last year's program.
     
  2. Application must be made on the prescribed Summer Employment Application form by the deadline established by the Department of Transportation.
     
  3. Applicants may apply for employment in a maximum of three (3) counties.
     
  4. Employments will be made under the West Virginia Division of Personnel’s Student Exempt Employment Policy.  Applicants must meet the requirement of that policy and the criterion as established by the West Virginia Department of Transportation.  All applicants must meet these guidelines to be eligible for consideration..
     
  5. Applicants must be full-time students at institutions of higher education to be eligible for consideration.  Appropriate interpretations will be make by Human Resources Division.
     
  6. All employees working under this program will be paid $6.10 per hour.  No holiday, annual leave, or sick leave is earned or paid.  The program will start on Wednesday, June 1, 2005 and end on Friday, July 29, 2005.
     
  7. Applicants are limited to four (4) periods of summer employment.
     
  8. Applicants pursuing postgraduate education are not eligible.
     
  9. Employees hired under this program are to work the standard forty-hour (40) work week.  Overtime should be incurred in emergency situations only.
     
  10. Applications will be received, maintained, and entered into the Summer Hire Tracking System at the District level.
     
  11. Primarily, only one (1) applicant from a given family unit may be hired.  If circumstances justify considering more than one it must be documented in writing and submitted to the Human Resources Division for final determination.

2005

  1. Application for summer employment under this program MUST be made on the prescribed Summer Employment application form by May 13, 2005.
  1. Applications should be returned to the county/district organization of preferred assignment by the deadline date of May 13, 2005.
  1. College applicants MUST attach to the application a copy of the most recent transcript (Fall 2004 semester or more current) which should include a list of classes showing the total hours for which enrolled during the spring semester.  If the transcript does not list the spring schedule of classes then one must be attached.  Applicants must be full-time students at institutions of higher education to be eligible for consideration.
     
  2. Applicants MUST complete in full the Student Exempt Acknowledgement portion of the application.  Any applications not completed accurately/completely will not be considered.
     
  3. Application may be made for employment in a maximum of three (3) counties.
  1. Application may be made for either clerical or field positions, or both.  A very limited number of office clerical positions are available and may not be available at all DOH locations.
  1. Applicants are limited to a maximum of four (4) periods of summer employment.
  1. Applicants pursuing postgraduate education are not eligible for this program.
     
  2. The Summer Employment Program will start on Wednesday, June 1, 2005 and end on Friday, July 29, 2005.  All employees will be paid $6.10 per hour.
