After
decades of planning, Corridor H is slowly being placed
under contract and completed. In addition to the new
5.5-mile stretch of four-lane expressway near Elkins,
three miles in the Moorefield-Baker area have been
completed by Union Equipment of a 20-mile segment totaling
$265 million.
Awarded
in November 2000 to Dick Corporation of
Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania,
the $20.1 million Clifford
Hollow Bridge will carry
Appalachian Corridor H on a continuous I-girder structure
whose six spans of 210, 275, 275, 275, 275 and 210 feet
will use nearly 5.2 million pounds of steel. An adjacent
segment of the roadway in the Moorefield-Baker area of
Hardy County includes a scenic overlook of the area to be crossed by
the bridge.
One of these additional contracts, a major
bridge awarded to Dick Corporation of Pittsburgh,
Pennsylvania for $20.1 million, the Clifford Hollow Bridge
may provide one of the most scenic views in
Hardy County. Over one half mile in length, the
six-span fabricated steel girder bridge will use over 2.3
million pounds of structural steel.
An adjacent 2.2-mile segment of roadway
under contract to Odom Construction of Hermitage,
Tennessee, for $33.5 million includes a scenic overlook of
the area crossed by the bridge.
Completion dates vary, but the remaining
projects in this twenty-mile segment should be done within
three years.
