Officially
opened to traffic in August 1999 in a ceremony honoring a
deceased major general and former state resident who received
the Congressional Medal of Honor for bravery in Vietnam, the
Charles
C. Rogers
Bridge carries WV 16 over the New River
and CSX rail lines north of Fayette County 13 at Cotton Hill.
An eight-span
rolled I-beam bridge utilizing 1,225,616 pounds of structural
steel completed by Bilco Construction Company of South
Charleston for $5.8 million, the new structure was an upstream
replacement for the
Cotton Hill
Bridge, an 812-foot steel deck truss.
Built in 1927 and renovated many times, including a 1991
contract for $210,000 to repair pier caps and provide foundation
protection against the water scour of the rushing New River, the
old Cotton Hill Bridge had been posted for four tons for almost
a decade.
Following the
opening ceremony, the old structure was detonated by the winner
of a raffle conducted by the local Convention and Visitors
Center with proceeds going toward renovating the local
athletic field. |
