Symbols & Names
- Leave a space between a numeral and a symbol (write 45 ft,
not 45ft). The exception to this rule is temperature (write 68ºF
not 68 ºC or 68º C).
- Do not leave a space between a unit symbol and its decimal prefix
(write kips, not k ips).
- Avoid the plural of unit symbols (write 45 lb, not 45 lbs),
but do use the plural of written unit names (several pounds).
- Do not use a period after a symbol (write 12 mi, not 12 mi.)
except when it occurs at the end of a sentence.
Writing Numbers
- Always use decimals, not fractions (write 0.75 lb, not ¾
lb).
- Use a zero before the decimal marker for values less than one
(write 0.45 ft, not .45 ft).
- Use spaces instead of commas to separate blocks of three digits
for any number over four digits (write 45 138 lb or 0.004
46 lb or 4371 lb). Note that this does not apply to the
expression of amounts of money.
