Vision


The vision of the West Virginia Governor’s Highway Safety Program is to reduce crashes, injuries, and fatalities on West Virginia’s roadways.


Mission


The West Virginia Governor’s Highway Safety Program provides leadership in Highway Safety by developing, promoting and coordinating projects, influencing public and private policy, and increasing public awareness of highway safety issues.

Goal - To reduce traffic crashes, deaths, injuries and property damage resulting therefrom.
 
Objectives -
 
1) To reduce the number of fatalities reported on public streets and highways to less than 380 by 2005.

Alcohol & Other Drug Countermeasures


Goal - To reduce the involvement of alcohol and other drugs in traffic crashes, deaths, and property damage resulting therefrom.
 
Objectives -
 
1) To reduce the number of impaired drivers in crashes, ages 16-20 to less than 600 by 2005.

Occupant Protection


Goal - To reduce the number of deaths and injuries through the increase in the proper use of safety restraints in traffic crashes.
 
Objectives -
 
1) To increase the percentage of reported use of lap and shoulder belts by motor vehicle occupants involved with traffic crashes to more than 80% by 2005.

Child Safety


Goal - To reduce the number of child (age 0-14) deaths and injuries through the increase in the proper use of child safety restraints in traffic crashes.
 
Objectives -
 
1) To increase the percentage of reported use of child restraints by children (age 0-14) involved with traffic crashes to more than 90% by 2005.
