The Bridge Department inspects, evaluates,
designs, maintains, repairs and constructs the nearly 700 bridges
in District Seven. There are currently three repair/construction
crews and two inspection crews. The office is staffed with a
Bridge Engineer, a Repair/Design Engineer, an Evaluation Engineer,
two Staff Engineers, an Engineering Technician, a Secretary, and a
Typist.
District Seven is home to 3 covered bridges, the historical
Philippi Covered Bridge, site of the first land battle of the
Civil War, Carrollton Covered Bridge also in Barbour County, and
the Walkersville Covered Bridge in Lewis County. Along with these
are 283 concrete, 42 steel truss, 332 steel beam, and 42 other
types of bridges. Approximately 60 bridges have posted weight
restrictions.
Bridges are normally inspected on a two year
cycle and interim inspections are performed when conditions
warrant a more frequent interval. Bridges are evaluated/analyzed
based on these inspections and prioritized for replacement or
repair. The completed inspection report is forwarded to Charleston
after review and approval by the Bridge Engineer and District
Engineer.
The design office is responsible for developing plans for
replacement structures. Repair crews then construct or repair
bridges from these plans. Since 1987, 199 structures have been
constructed by State and Contractors’ forces. These consist of 107
concrete, 13 timber, 70 steel beam, 6 steel truss, and 3 pipe
arches. |
