The Bridge Department inspects, evaluates, designs, maintains,
repairs and constructs the more than 700 bridges in District
Three. There are currently three Repair/Construction Crews and
three Bridge Inspection Crews. The office staff consists of a
Bridge Engineer, who is assisted by a Repair/Design Engineer, an
Evaluation Engineer, two Staff Engineers, an Engineering Technician,
a Secretary, and an Office Assistant.
District Three is home to several large bridges across the Ohio
River. This includes the I-77 Williamstown-Marietta, Ohio
River Bridge, which is North America's largest Pennsylvania Petit
Truss. The William S. Ritchie, Jr. in Ravenswood, the Hi
Carpenter Memorial in St. Marys and the Parkersburg - Belpre
Bridges, which are the 18th, 19th, and 37th largest Cantilever
Trusses in North America, respectively. The WV 31 Williamstown
- Marietta Ohio River Bridge is the 28th largest Continuous Truss in
North America. District Three has 326 concrete, 62 steel
truss, 303 steel beam, 11 timber and 16 other type of bridges.
The Inspection Crews normally inspect the bridges on a two-year
cycle, with interim inspections performed as needed. The
inspection information is used by the Evaluation Office to
analyze/evaluate the bridges and compile this information into
bridge inspection reports. The Bridge Engineer reviews and
approves the reports and uses them to prioritize repairs and
replacement of the District's bridges. The bridge inspection
reports are also forwarded to Central Office in Charleston for their
review and project prioritization.
The Design Office is responsible for developing plans for the
Repair Crews to repair or replace bridges. They also develop
contract bridge plans for private contractors to bid and
construct. Since 1987, 160 structures have been constructed by
State and Private forces in District Three. They consist of
117 concrete, 9 timber, 27 steel beam, 3 steel truss and 4 other
types of Bridges.
