Highway Data Services

The Highway Data Services section of the Program Planning and Administration Division collects and compiles statistical information on the 36,279 miles of roadway that is part of the Division of Highways (DOH) state highway system.  This information includes:

  • Roadway lengths
  • Roadway surface types (paved and unpaved)
  • Roadway pavement widths
  • Roadway grade widths including shoulders
  • Right of way widths
  • Average daily traffic total
  • Number of lanes
  • Designated route numbers
  • Local road names
  • Roadway additions, redesignations and abandonments

The Highway Data Services section provides informational and statistical services to the Division of Highways, interdepartmental divisions and outside agencies, including the State Police, Department of Mines, Department of Natural Resources, etc., regarding highway matters.  The HDS section also works in conjunction with district offices to provide information and statistical services to the public.  We submit statistical data to the Federal Highway Administration providing essential information on highway condition, performance and use that is necessary to make equitable apportionments of Federal Highway funding available to the state of West Virginia.
