School-Zone
Flashers
The Division of Highways will install appropriate passive (static)
regulatory and warning signs for school zones, and will install
passive warning signs for other conditions along the highway, such
as truck entrances, if a traffic engineering study indicates that
such signs are warranted.
Under certain circumstances, it may be desirable to supplement
school signs, school crossing signs or other warning signs with
flashers or with hazard identification beacons. These flashers or
beacons shall be yellow in color and shall be installed above the
sign that they supplement.
The installation, operation and maintenance of flashers or beacons
shall be the responsibility of the school board or associated
organization, such as a PTA, or of the industry. The organization or
industry shall be responsible for all installation, power, operation
and maintenance costs.
It will be necessary for the originating party to contact Traffic
Engineering Division to initiate the installation, and to obtain
a permit from the Division of Highways before the installation is
started.
Installation & Permits
School boards, PTAs, industries and developers who wish to install
warning sign and flasher assemblies on state highways must follow
the standard details and apply for permits. Flasher installation
details and permit packages will be assembled and transmitted at no
charge upon request. Contact the Traffic
Engineering Division to request a package. |
