Highway Service Signs

Motorist Service Signs on Expressways
On conventional highways, motorist services such as fuel, food lodging and camping are generally within sight and available to the traveler along the route. It is also assumed that service signing, except for hospitals, police assistance and tourist information will not be needed in cities and towns.

On expressways, however, it is quite likely that motorist service signs will be desirable or necessary outside of cities and towns where such services are infrequent, and where they can be found only on an intersecting crossroad. Therefore, the Division of Highways will erect symbol service signs on expressways in rural areas when requested by qualifying businesses. They are erected at no cost to the business. Signs may be installed for fuel, food, lodging and camping facilities, and for hospitals.

Requirements for Services
Only services that adequately serve the needs of the motorist shall qualify for signs. The general criteria, which must be met before signs may be erected, are as follows:

Fuel

  • Vehicle services such as gas, diesel fuel, natural gas, oil, lubrication, tire repair and water
  • Adequate restroom facilities, separated by gender
  • Continuous operation at least 16 hours a day, seven days a week
  • Public telephone

Food

  • Good maintenance and cleanliness in conformity with West Virginia State Board of Health requirements
  • Open seven days a week, 365 days a year
  • Adequate restroom facilities, separated by gender
  • Continuous operation with seating for 12 or more people, serving three meals a day, seven days a week (breakfast, lunch and dinner) with breakfast beginning between 7:00 AM and 8:00 AM
  • Public telephone

Lodging

  • Adequate sleeping accommodations, with 12 or more rooms
  • Clean and well maintained, in conformity with local laws and ordinances
  • Public telephone on the premises

Camping

  • Adequate parking accommodations
  • A minimum of 12 campsites
  • Sanitary facilities, and a safe water supply in accordance with state and county health department requirements
  • Public telephone available on the premises

Hospital

  • Continuous emergency care capability, with a doctor on duty 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Requesting Signs
Requests for motorist service signs on expressways should be submitted to the Traffic Engineering Division. The request must identify the business and give its exact location and specify the type or types of signs being sought.
