Adopt-A-Highway
Program Rules
- Participants must be at
least 12 years old.
- Adopted roads must be a
minimum of two miles long and must be continuous. Two separate
sections totaling two T-shaped and L- shaped sections are not
adoptable. Cleaning both sides of a one-mile section does not
qualify as two miles. Interstate highways are not adoptable. DOH
has final approval on all adoptions.
- Adoptions are for a
period of two years (beginning the first day of the month
following approval) and may be renewed when the contract expires
by mutual consent of the state and the adoptee.
- Litter must be picked up
at least three times a year. Cleanup dates are scheduled by the
volunteer but must be at least 30 days apart.
- Volunteers are required
to watch the Adopt-A-Highway Safety Video prior to the first
litter pickup.
- The state furnishes
safety training, blaze-orange safety vests, garbage bags,
plastic gloves, traffic warning signs and recognition signs.
- Volunteers are required
to notify the DOH county office three days prior to a cleanup
and again when the cleanup is completed. Upon notification that
a cleanup has taken place, DOH will collect and dispose of
garbage bags on roadsides.
- Volunteers are required
to complete a short report card after each pickup. The card
should be turned in at the DOH county garage or mailed to AAH,
WVDEP, 601 - 57th Street,
Charleston, WV 25304
- The state schedules two
annual statewide cleanups on the last Saturday in April and
September. Volunteer participation in these events is encouraged
but not required. Adoptees must clean their adopted highway with
their own membership and cannot subcontract the work.
