| Highway Data Services
The
Highway Data Services section of the Program Planning and Administration Division
collects and compiles statistical information on the 36,279 miles of
roadway that is part of the Division of Highways (DOH) state highway
system. This information
includes:
- Roadway lengths
- Roadway surface types (paved and unpaved)
- Roadway pavement widths
- Roadway grade widths including shoulders
- Right of way widths
- Average daily traffic total
- Number of lanes
- Designated route numbers
- Local road names
- Roadway additions, redesignations and abandonments
The Highway Data
Services section
provides informational and statistical services to the Division of
Highways, interdepartmental divisions and outside agencies,
including the State Police, Department of Mines, Department of
Natural Resources, etc., regarding highway matters. The HDS section also works in conjunction with district offices to
provide information and statistical services to the public. We
submit statistical data to the Federal Highway
Administration providing essential information on highway condition,
performance and use that is necessary to make equitable
apportionments of Federal Highway funding available to the state of
West Virginia.
Some interesting facts concerning roads on the
state highway system are:
- Sixty percent of the roads on the state highway
system are paved.
Kanawha County has the most paved roads;
Pleasants County the least.
- Forty percent of the roads on the state highway
system are unpaved.
Preston County has the most unpaved roads;
Hancock County the least.
- Kanawha County has the most road miles on the state
highway system with 1,510;
Brooke and Hancock Counties the least with 231 each.
- Kanawha County has the most miles of interstate
with 86;
Raleigh County is second with 47.
- Randolph County has the most miles of US (United
States) routes with 104;
Kanawha County is second with 90.
- Wyoming County has the most miles of WV (West
Virginia) routes with 134;
Pocahontas County is second with 133.
- Kanawha County has the most miles of county (state
local service) routes with 1,119;
Preston County is second with 1,085.
